Technology Solutions

The One Heart app, when coupled with a digital stethoscope, is a portable, affordable and scalable option for recording kids’ heart sounds and sharing it with cardiologists remotely for expert consult. Continuous updates to improve usability and the function of the app, including improving our algorithm to automatically detect abnormal heart murmurs, are necessary to keep the technology both useful to the patient and relevant for our screening partners.

 

Heart Screenings

To date over 26,000 children heave received heart screenings using the One Heart app. We are committed to training and supporting more health workers to reach more kids. One Heart Health has partnered with multiple institutions across Bolivia, China, India, Mongolia, Nigeria, and Uganda to build and scale their CHD screening capabilities by  integrating the One Heart App into their screening methodology to enable remote consultation to reach children in rural and low-resource areas.

 

Proven Research

The One Heart app is a telemedicine solution for clinical settings as well as the field. Research with  international partners including West Virginia University, Kardiozentrum in Bolivia, Obafemi Awolowo University and Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, and First Maternity Hospital in Mongolia, is setting out to prove that a pediatric cardiologist can detect heart murmurs as accurately using the One Heart app remotely, as they can listening to a child’s heart in-person.

Heart Screenings

The lack of dependable Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) screening services in rural areas incurs heavy financial costs on the family and exhaust public resources, as patients often need to travel far to reach a pediatric cardiologist. When a rural healthcare worked suspects an abnormal murmur, they can inflict a cost on the family and the health system if it is a false positive. Even worse, when a healthcare worker suspects an abnormal murmur but decides not to refer the family to a pediatric cardiologist, the patient/child can die if it is a false negative. The One Heart App enables these rural healthcare workers to record a patients heart sound and send to a pediatric cardiologists to listen and provide feedback.

This can eliminate costs associated with false positives providing cost savings for the families and public health systems, but more importantly it can save lives by preventing children from being missed due to false negatives!  Each donation supports our efforts in bringing cardiological expertise into low-resource areas thousands of miles away, and within seconds.

One Heart App with AI Screening

We continue to improve the One Heart App by incorporating cutting-edge research and user feedback from our screening partners. In 2024, we will improve overall system security to meet HIPPA and HITRUST requirements, optimize the app for our users, and add at least two new features based on our partners’ priorities. One Heart Health has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to enable the world’s first real-time, automatic, heart murmur detection function, the Chao Heart Alert. Instead of waiting perhaps a day or more for a remote cardiologist to review heart sounds, with our updated algorithm, users will be informed immediately by the One Heart App if their heart sounds healthy or a concerning heart murmur is detected.
