The One Heart app, when coupled with a digital stethoscope and a smart-phone, is a simple method for health workers to share heart sounds with off-site cardiologists for expert consultation. After screening over 26,000 kids, the One Heart app has assisted more than 50 kids in gaining advanced follow-up cardiac care.

But did you know that our app could do so much more?

One Heart Health has already begun making major upgrades to the One Heart App, via machine learning, to enable real-time results during heart screenings – something we call the Chao Heart Alert.

How the Chao Heart Alert works: Imagine you are the rural parent holding your child in this photo. You have traveled a long distance to your local clinic to investigate why your baby is failing to thrive. Using the One Heart app, the front-line health worker has gathered your child’s heart sounds and uploaded it to the cloud for remote expert consultation.

With the new Chao Heart Alert function, currently under development, instead of waiting a day or more for a remote cardiologist to review your child’s records, the heart murmur detection algorithm can automatically identify your child’s heart murmur during your appointment! This technology gives front-line health workers the ability to immediately direct you and your child to advanced follow-up care. The Chao Heart Alert’s real-time functionality saves your family a long-trip home, time, resources and worry, just when you need help most.

Your charitable investment in the Chao Heart Alert R&D will not only fund this upgrade, but will also encourage a revolutionary leap in the speed, efficiency and scalability of the One Heart telemedicine solution. Cardiologists still need to wade through thousands of healthy heart sounds to find the statistical one-in-one-hundred patient with a pathologic murmur. Utilizing machine learning, the Chao Heart Alert focuses cardiologist attention on children with irregular heart sounds first, prioritizing their care and improving workflow efficiency.

Motivation:

Congenital heart defects (CHD) affect one in 120 newborns; one in ten of these children live in low resource setting with limited access to CHD care. There is no effective way of avoiding late recognition of CHD in rural setting in developing countries. Training local health professions on the One Heart app and connecting them with expert cardiologists provide a method for early diagnosis of CHD and improved health outcomes.
